I don't believe in “Artists’ Statements”, those pompously overblown and convoluted
explanations about what artists do and what their paintings mean.
If I talked about my work and told you what it means, or what I wanted to say when I chose
a particular subject, you would stand in front of the painting and think about my words,
and you would see what I said you should see and not what I painted.
Whether or not you agreed, it would be an argument that would only cloud your vision.
One should not have to explain what’s on the canvas with clever phrases. As an artist, I paint not to express
any soulful meaning, but to make paintings that answer the question: Would I want it hanging on a wall in my house?
Writing or speaking about art is an intellectual process. My paintings are not intellectual.
They’re intuitive. I paint what I feel like painting at any given moment - a particular subject,
a mood or feeling. It is not conceptual in any way. I am not trying to make a statement -
political or otherwise.
In short, the work is what it is. If it speaks to you, you’ll understand it. Conversely,
if it doesn’t speak to you, move on, forget about it. It’s my failure, not yours.
Art is a visual exchange between the artist and the viewer. Nothing more, nothing less. Word.
